Public Transport

Singapore has one of the best public transport systems in the world (MRT and Bus).

Payment (SimplyGo)

You don't need to buy a ticket! You can simply tap your foreign Visa or Mastercard (contactless) directly on the gantry readers.

Alternatively, buy an EZ-Link card from MRT stations or 7-Eleven ($10, includes $5 value).

MRT (Train)

Trains run from 5:30am to about midnight. Frequency is 2-5 minutes during peak hours. No eating or drinking is allowed in stations or trains (fine up to $500).

Ride Hailing

Uber is NOT available. Download Grab, Gojek, or TADA for private car hires.

Payments & Cash

Singapore is highly digital, but cash is still king at hawker centers.

  • Currency: Singapore Dollar (SGD).
  • Cash: Essential for hawker centers and small shops.
  • Credit Cards: Accepted almost everywhere else (Malls, Restaurants, Attractions).
  • Tipping: Not expected. A 10% service charge is usually included in bills.

Local Etiquette

Tray Return

It is mandatory to return your tray and crockery at hawker centers. Leaving it behind can result in a fine.

Chope-ing

If you see a tissue packet on a table at a food court, that seat is taken! This is called "chope-ing".

Escalators

Stand on the left, walk on the right.

Safety & Laws

Singapore is incredibly safe, but strict laws exist to maintain order.

  • Chewing Gum: Banned from sale. You can bring a small amount for personal use, but strictly do not litter.
  • Littering: Heavily fined.
  • Smoking: Only allowed in designated areas. Strictly prohibited in parks and sheltered walkways.
  • Drug Offences: Extremely severe penalties, including capital punishment.
